Raymond Johnson Ne Clah He Yei Dancer Gouache
Original gouache painting by Navajo artist Raymond Johnson, also known as “Ne Clah He,” depicting a stylized Yei-inspired ceremonial dancer. The figure holds a rattle and wears a distinctive blue mask, feather elements, turquoise-style jewelry, and a fur tail accent, all set against a vivid orange ground. The composition’s flat color planes, rhythmic linework, and symbolic costume elements reflect Navajo ceremonial themes interpreted through a modern, graphic aesthetic. Signed lower right “Ne Clah He.” Presented matted and unframed.

He is referenced in Clara Lee Tanner’s Southwest Indian Painting and exhibited in the 1969 Scottsdale show. Johnson also contributed illustrations to Navajo Community College Press publications in the early 1970s.
