Montoya Johnson Navajo Sand Painting Beauty Chant 1978
Original Navajo sand painting by Montoya Johnson (Sheep Springs, Tohatchi, New Mexico), dated August 7, 1978. This work represents a stylized corn plant, a central symbol in Navajo (Diné) culture associated with life, sustenance, and feminine growth. The imagery aligns with the Navajo “Beauty Way” (Hózhóójí) ceremonial tradition, specifically referencing the coming-of-age aspect noted in the handwritten inscription on the reverse.
Montoya Johnson is not widely documented in major institutional collections, but works attributed to artists from the Sheep Springs/Tohatchi region (a known Navajo art-producing area) are recognized for maintaining traditional motifs into the late 20th century. Dated examples from the 1970s are especially desirable, as they reflect a period when Native artists increasingly signed their work.
Condition:
In very good condition overall, with light wear consistent with age. The sand surface appears stable with no major loss observed. Colors remain intact. Frame shows minor scuffs and edge wear. Backing includes original handwritten inscription and age toning.

Overall: 16 x 16 inches
