Ilse Lanphere Oil Painting “Summer Storm over Picacho”
Original oil on canvas panel titled Summer Storm over Picacho (Peak) by Ilse Lanphere, signed “ILSE” lower left. This compelling Southwestern landscape depicts an adobe dwelling set within the Mesilla Valley, with Picacho Peak rising prominently in the distance beneath a turbulent, rain-laden sky. The composition reflects the region’s semi-arid climate—sunlit earth tones contrasted with dramatic monsoon clouds and visible streaks of rainfall. Lanphere’s controlled brushwork and thoughtful use of light convey both the dryness of the terrain and the sudden atmospheric shifts typical of southern New Mexico.
The scene balances structure and openness, with the grounded architecture anchoring a sweeping desert vista. Painted on a Grumbacher canvas panel and housed in a handpainted wood frame with linen matting, it offers strong regional character and visual depth.
Artist Biography:
Ilse Elizabeth Stauff Lanphere was a German-born, self-taught artist who settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico around 1960. Her work reflects an intimate understanding of the Mesilla Valley landscape, emphasizing structure, light, and spatial realism over romanticized interpretation. Signing simply “ILSE,” her paintings remained largely within private collections in Doña Ana County, where she lived and worked with her husband, Robert. Her compositions suggest lived experience, capturing the architecture and atmosphere of the region with clarity and restraint.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with minor soiling to the matting and light wear consistent with age. The painting surface shows natural texture and age-related craquelure, with no remarkable damage observed. Frame shows mild surface wear but remains structurally sound.
