Carved Wood Dragon Walking Staff — Polychrome Folk Art Sculpture
A large carved and painted wood walking staff, this one-of-a-kind piece transforms a naturally curved branch and root into a full-length dragon in polychrome relief. The serpent's scaled body runs the length of the shaft, its yellow-eyed head rearing open-jawed at the neck — and at the crown, a carved human figure kneels in contemplation, cradling a painted Earth globe rendered in blue and green with handprint motifs. The base terminates in a naturally forked root carved and painted as a multi-toed reptilian talon, grounding the composition in a creature that seems drawn from the earth itself.
The iconography is deliberate and layered: dragon as elemental power, the human figure as steward, the globe with its pressed-hand imagery as a statement of shared responsibility. This is the visual language of American self-taught folk art — a singular cosmological vision executed in wood, paint, and fire. It functions as both staff and sculpture, and displays best standing upright or mounted.
CONDITION Good. Carved and painted surfaces hold well overall, with paint intact across the figure, scales, and shaft. Two toes on the claw base are chipped, as visible in photos. Natural checks along the shaft are consistent with the wood's movement and appear stable.
