Hohner Anchor Brand A/D Diatonic Button Accordion, Trossingen Germany c.1910–30
A Hohner two-row diatonic button accordion bearing the firm's "Anchor Brand" (Ankermarke) cartouche — the export trademark Matthias Hohner adopted to distinguish goods shipped from Trossingen to the Americas, where the anchor signaled overseas trade. The treble end is lithographed in black and gilt with dense diamond, scroll, and crescent ornament over a light fruitwood case, framed by nickel corner caps and a pierced fretwork grille of foliate strapwork backed in gauze. Twenty-one buttons in two staggered rows handle the melody side; the bass end carries eight buttons on a stepped wooden block over a punched soundhole grille with a sewn leather hand strap.
The keyblock is hand-stamped "A/D," identifying this as a bisonoric instrument tuned in the keys of A and D — a configuration favored for Norteño, Tejano, polka, and Cajun repertoire across the Mesilla Valley and broader Southwest. A separate nickel "Steel Reeds Made in Germany" plate is affixed to the bellows frame, denoting Hohner's upgraded reed specification over the brass reeds of entry-level boxes. Anchor Brand examples in this decoration scheme are typically attributed to the c.1910–1930 production window prior to wartime export disruption.⚑
CONDITION
Good overall with strong lithographed graphics and bright button work. Finish wear and loss to the bellows tape with flaking along the folds, one leather hand strap previously repaired and worn through, some fastening straps absent, lifting trim, and age-appropriate handling wear throughout. Untested for play.
