Jack Cunningham 1986 Studio Pottery Pitcher Postmodern Memphis Palette
Hand-thrown stoneware pitcher with a flared, pinched spout and a pulled handle terminating in a sculpted tail. The lower body carries a hand-painted Postmodern composition: pink and dove-grey diagonal fields broken by short white bars and clusters of cobalt dot triads, all under a speckled clear glaze. The upper collar is left in a creamy speckled ground with crisp throwing rings encircling the shoulder.
Incised to the underside "Cunningham 86," ⚑ attributed to Jack Cunningham, an American studio potter active in the 1980s working in a Memphis-influenced postmodern idiom. The pastel palette and geometric overlay are consistent with the New Wave studio ceramics movement of the period, which absorbed Sottsass-era graphic vocabulary into functional vessels.
CONDITION
Excellent with no damage. Minor firing imperfections present along the bottom edge, consistent with the maker's hand-finished process. Glaze is bright and the painted decoration is fully intact.
