Description

Pair Borzoi Recumbent Dog Figurines, Cold-Painted Bronze, Japan c.1950s

A matched pair of small cast figurines depicting recumbent Borzoi hounds, each in mirrored pose with forepaws extended and head turned in alert profile — a format that descends directly from the Vienna cold-painted bronze tradition popularized by Bergman and his contemporaries in the late 19th century. The coats are worked with dense parallel chasing through the body, feathering, and tail, finished in a dark patina with warm gilt brass tones breaking through the high points. Construction is consistent with mid-century Japanese export castings produced for the American gift trade ⚑, and the undersides retain applied "Made in Japan" foil labels.

Borzoi imagery carried strong Art Deco-era cachet through Erté, Louis Icart, and the RCA "Nipper" advertising lineage, and small bronzed dog figurines of this type were marketed as desk accessories and curio shelf pieces. The pair displays well together as left- and right-facing companions.

CONDITION

Good overall, with both figures intact and presenting well as a mirrored pair. Patina shows expected rubbing and tonal variation across raised surfaces with brass undertone exposed at the muzzles, shoulders, and feet. Both "Made in Japan" foil labels remain partially legible with edge loss.
