Description

Hukin & Heath Sheffield Sterling-Collared Fish Service for Twelve in Oak Canteen

A 26-piece Victorian English fish service by Hukin & Heath, the silver-plated blades and tines hand-engraved with foliate scrollwork, lily-of-the-valley sprays, and stippled bright-cut borders. Each piece mounts a tapered ivorine (celluloid) handle to a reeded sterling silver collar struck with full Sheffield hallmarks, the larger pair of serving pieces matching the place settings in pattern and execution. Hukin & Heath operated from 1855 through 1953, registering marks at the Birmingham Assay Office in 1875 and the London Assay Office in 1879 under founders Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath; the firm is best remembered for the electroplate produced in the 1870s and 1880s under the design direction of Dr. Christopher Dresser.

Housed in the original quarter-sawn oak canteen with a brass shield escutcheon engraved with a script "M," the interior fitted in tufted royal blue silk velvet with retaining straps for the serving set in the lid and individual slotted positions for the twelve place settings below. A brass trade plate at the front edge reads "Secure Lock / English Make / Patent."
