Monumental Heteromorph Ammonite Fossil Group, Multi-Specimen Plate
A near-four-foot fossil plate presenting a museum-caliber assemblage of Early Cretaceous ammonites in Moroccan limestone matrix. The dominant specimen is a complete Ancyloceras matheronianum — a heteromorph ammonite with the genus's signature morphology: a long straight shaft curving into a tight U-turn hook before terminating in an open planispiral coil. Transverse ribbing runs the full length of the shaft with consistent spacing and mild tuberculation. Set into the same matrix, a large Douvilleiceras mammillatum displays the species's characteristic densely tuberculate coiling, the evenly-spaced nodes standing in sharp relief against fine transverse ribs. Two additional heteromorph ammonite impressions are preserved in the matrix surface, completing a composition that reads as much as sculpture as specimen.
Both genera are diagnostic of the Aptian stage of the Early Cretaceous, and the pale grey Moroccan limestone matrix is consistent with commercial deposits from the Saharan limestone formations that have yielded the world's finest heteromorph material. At approximately 300 lbs and 47 inches across, this is a genuine large-format display piece — a scale rarely encountered outside institutional and high-end private collections.
CONDITION
Displays well overall with strong presentation across all specimens. Professionally repaired. Drywall transfer (white residue) is visible along several fossil edges and can be scraped off. Some matrix loss at perimeter is consistent with field collection and preparation.
