Holmegaard Smoke Grey Hand-Blown Art Glass Biomorphic Bowl, Signed & Dated 1988
A sculptural smoke-grey art glass bowl from Holmegaard of Denmark, hand-blown into a freeform biomorphic shape with pinched, upswept sides that fold inward like a folded petal. The thick walls carry the characteristic optical depth of Holmegaard's smoked glass — pale at the rim, deepening to near-black where the glass pools at the base. The polished pontil sits cleanly recessed beneath, and the underside is engraved Holmegaard 1967 .
Founded in 1825, Holmegaard Glassworks became the defining Danish art-glass house of the twentieth century, producing work by Per Lütken, Otto Brauer, and Michael Bang. This smoke-toned freeform bowl follows the organic vocabulary Lütken established in the 1950s and carried forward through later decades — sculptural rather than utilitarian, meant to be read as form first.
