Description

Ray Rizzo Seated Figure with Olla — Copper-Patinated Steel Wall Sculpture

A wall-mounted steel sculpture by Ray Rizzo, depicting a robed figure in profile seated beside a rounded olla. The piece is plasma-cut from sheet steel and finished with a heat-applied patina that shifts between copper, oxblood, and smoky teal across the surface — the kind of flame-coloring that gives Rizzo's metalwork its painterly depth. Cut-out details define the figure's hair, the olla's wave-pattern banding, and the negative-space eye, while applied embellishments add dimension: a raw turquoise nugget pinned at the figure's temple, a second turquoise stone anchoring a burst of natural feathers at the neck of the olla.

Rizzo's seated-figure-with-pottery compositions are a recognizable line within his catalog of wall art, blending metalwork, stone, and organic material into a single iconographic vignette. The verso is finished in flat black and signed Ray Rizzo in silver paint pen, with an integral welded hanger for wall mounting.

Artist

Ray Rizzo is a metal sculptor working in the Pueblo and desert figurative tradition, producing plasma-cut and torch-patinated steel wall pieces that occupy a genre popular in gallery and gift markets across New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado from the 1990s onward. His figures — seated women, pottery carriers, dancers — are recognized by their fluid silhouette cutting, flame-patinated copper-to-teal color gradations, and the integration of raw turquoise and natural feathers as applied elements. Rizzo's work appears regularly at regional art markets and in gallery inventories throughout the region, and his signed pieces trade steadily in the secondary market.

CONDITION

Excellent. Patina is rich and intact across the front face with no remarkable damage. Turquoise stones and feather bundle are secure. Verso shows minor handling marks consistent with studio finishing.
