Bill Bender "Desert Wash" Mid-Century California Desert Landscape Print
A mid-century reproduction of a desert landscape by California painter Bill Bender (1919–2016), signed in the plate "Bill Bender '57" at lower left. The scene captures a dry wash cutting through pale sand and scattered stones, anchored by a single deep-green smoke tree against a backdrop of soft violet hills and a wide sky streaked with cumulus. Bender's signature palette — bleached desert floor, mauve mountains, and that particular Southern California sky — comes through cleanly in the printing.
Issued as a photo print on canvas-textured panel, a popular mid-century format that gave reproductions the surface character of an original oil. Housed in its original solid knotty pine frame with a thin gilt liner — a classic ranch-style presentation typical of the late 1950s and 1960s. Bender was a fixture of the Palm Desert and Twentynine Palms painting scene, and prints of his work circulated widely through California galleries and gift shops during his lifetime.
CONDITION
Good. A streak of toning runs across the sky. Frame shows light handling wear consistent with age. Print surface is clean overall with no tears or losses.
