Description

Pair of Mexican Folk Art Hand-Painted Wooden Vessels — Fruit & Vegetable Motifs

A charming pair of hand-painted wooden vessels in the Mexican folk art tradition, each carved from solid wood with walls approximately 1/2" thick. The shorter red-pink vessel features a barrel-shaped form with an iron ring handle and is decorated with whimsical hand-painted produce — a striped green melon, a yellow mango, and a cluster of golden prickly pears (tunas) — all bordered by black and gilt rim bands. The taller yellow vessel takes a more cylindrical jar form with a rolled lip, painted with a rosy apple and a pair of pink radishes against the saffron ground, finished with a stylized leaf-and-pip border at the neck.

The painted motifs — melon, mango, prickly pear, apple, radish — read as a kitchen or market vocabulary, the sort of decorative storage or display pieces produced for domestic use. Both vessels carry honest age, with paint chipping, surface abrasion, and the warm patina that only comes from decades of handling. Sold together as a pair.

CONDITION

Good and Rustic by Design. Heavy, solid wood construction with authentic paint chipping, edge wear, and surface scuffing throughout — all consistent with age and use. The red vessel shows a visible vertical crack to one side passing through the green melon motif; the yellow vessel shows paint loss around the base and rim.
