Description

Tarahumara & Tohono O'odham Hand-Woven Basket Group, Seven Pieces

A grouping of seven contemporary Native American hand-woven baskets representing two distinct weaving traditions. Three plaited Tarahumara baskets from the Sierra Madre of northern Mexico — pine-needle and sotol fiber in tight herringbone twill, two with fitted lids and one open form with a rolled rim. Four coiled Tohono O'odham (Papago) baskets from southern Arizona, worked in bear grass and yucca with characteristic two-tone banding: a round double-handled tray, an oval double-handled tray, and two lidded jars with finial knobs.

The Tarahumara pieces show the fine diagonal plaiting the Rarámuri are known for — utilitarian containers refined over generations into objects of quiet geometric beauty. The Tohono O'odham coiled work demonstrates the contrast-stitch technique that defines the tradition, with split yucca worked over bundled bear grass cores. Together the lot offers a teaching set across two of the borderland's most enduring basketry cultures.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear. One basket shows wear on the bottom; minor surface wear is present across the group with no structural damage. All lids fit their respective bases.
