Antique Solid Mahogany Three-Door Armoire with Beveled Mirror & Brass Hardware

A substantial Continental armoire in solid mahogany — confirmed no veneer — built along the classic three-door formula: two paneled outer doors flanking a full-length beveled mirror center door, all rising to a pronounced arched bonnet crown with deeply molded cornice. Door and drawer panels are worked in a bold book-matched chevron pattern, the grain running in mirrored V's to a center diamond point — a joinery flourish that requires solid stock and a practiced hand. Reeded pilasters frame each door bay, and all six doors and drawers carry ornate cast brass hardware: scrolled Rococo-style escutcheon plates on the door locks and matching bail-pull handles on the two base drawers. Turned bun feet ground the piece with period-appropriate weight.

The interior divides into two distinct zones. The main bay — accessed through the mirrored center door and left outer door — offers an open hanging space with a substantial footprint. The right outer door conceals three fixed shelves at 17", 12.5", and 16" heights. Two large drawers run the full width of the base below the door line. The back panel is pine board construction, typical of period Continental case goods where secondary woods were utilitarian. A pencil inscription on the upper back rail reads "A.M.L. Walter" — partially legible; possibly a maker, owner, or delivery notation. The piece includes its original key.

CONDITION

Good overall — the piece is sturdy and presents well from the front. Scuffing present on exterior surfaces consistent with age and use; the right side exterior panel shows UV discoloration. The right door lock is functional but does not lock. Interior shelving is not original, and the interior was reworked at some point; old repairs to the back panel are present on the right side. Mirrors are beveled and intact.
