Description

Pat Denton "Chief Proud Fox" Original Watercolor Portrait, Signed & Dated 1980

Original watercolor portrait by Pat Denton, titled Chief Proud Fox, signed and dated 1980 at lower left. The composition presents a Plains-style figure in profile, wearing a coyote or wolf-head headdress with the animal's muzzle rising above the brow and the pelt cascading down the shoulders. A silver concho fastens a wrapped braid at the chest, and the figure's blanket is rendered in soft earth tones with geometric red and cream banding. Denton's loose, atmospheric handling of pigment produces granulated washes and pooled textures that dissolve the background into weathered abstraction — a signature of her watercolor technique.

Pat Denton, born and raised in western Nebraska and based in Colorado from 1968 onward, built a national reputation through awards, solo and invitational shows, and inclusion in Who's Who in American Art. The Museum of West Texas Tech in Lubbock acquired her watercolor Winter Windmill in 1974, and her painting October Song was selected for the 1982 Artists of America calendar. The work is triple-matted under glass in a stepped walnut-finish frame.

A Note on the Artist

Denton's approach favors loose, creative brushwork with impressionistic realism — her drawing skill anchors the figure while wet-into-wet washes do the atmospheric work. She works in watercolor, acrylic, collage, and drawing; instructs workshops; and juries shows. A biographical placard accompanies the lot affixed to the verso (damaged but legible).

CONDITION

Very Good. Minor scuffing to the frame and minor water staining to the matting that does not impact the artwork itself. The biographical documentation on the verso is damaged (torn and partially obscured) but remains readable. Artwork presents cleanly under glass.
