American Toy & Furniture Co. "Junior Carpenter" Tool Chest with Tools, 1950s
Before plastic playsets and electronic everything, a kid who got a Teach N Fun Junior Carpenter Tool Chest for Christmas got the real thing — scaled down, but real. Actual metal block planes with adjustable blades. A crosscut saw with genuine teeth. Cast pliers that gripped. The American Toy and Furniture Company of Chicago understood that the best toy is the one that doesn't feel like a toy, and this set delivered: functional tools sized for small hands, packed into a lithographed tin chest bright enough to make any six-year-old's eyes go wide. These sets taught kids to measure, to cut, to build — and the ones who grew up with them remember them.
This chest retains a strong partial complement of original tools. The blue marbled plastic-handled crosscut saw is stamped A.T.F. on the handle, as are the matching green cast pliers. The nickel-finish carpenter's square carries the oval Teach N Fun Toys stamp and includes hole gauges along the blade. A red painted bench plane with black knob and a small unpainted No. 7 block plane are both present — the block plane retains its full iron assembly including cap iron and thumb wheel. A 12" wood ruler branded American Teach N Fun Toys (Made in U.S.A.) and a red wood spirit level round out the measuring tools. Also included: a coping saw frame (blade absent), a sheet of sandpaper, and a dark leather or oilcloth sheath with a flat scraper or chisel. The tin chest closes on its original Atco-branded latch with wire bail handle intact. Interior lithography features completed-project diagrams — a shelf and a stool — alongside the full maker's imprint. Several tools depicted on the box art are absent from the set.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear throughout. The tin chest shows scratches, scuffs, and corner denting; rust staining is present on the white side panels and one side shows a rust drip streak. Tools display paint loss, light oxidation, and surface wear consistent with actual childhood use — the No. 7 block plane in particular shows heavy paint loss and surface rust to the casting. The coping saw frame is present but the blade is missing.
