Description

Large Mixed-Media Figural Sculpture, Cast Stone with Polychrome Inlay

A large-scale figurative sculpture in cast stone, presenting as a kneeling or seated torso — headless and armless in the manner of a classical fragment — but the resemblance to antiquity is only the starting point. Every surface carries an obsessive, layered vocabulary of impressed and applied relief: woven bands, beaded chains, rosettes, architectural grids, sunbursts, combed textures, miniature figures, and patterned tiles that accumulate into a dense pictorial skin. The piece reads differently from every angle — tightly organized relief panels on the front face, a looser organic accumulation of circular and biomorphic bosses on one side, a vertical bone-white seam running the full length of the back, and a cluster of polychrome inlays — turquoise, coral red, white, and blue rectangular stones or glass tesserae — set into the upper shoulder like a votive cartouche. Impressed text and alphanumeric sequences integrated into the surface along the spine are compositional elements of the work, not markings applied separately.

The construction is as deliberate as the surface. Sections of the interior are exposed at the hip and lower torso, where the outer sculptural skin pulls away to reveal a blue-grey core — a built reveal that invites the viewer to read the object simultaneously as ruin, reliquary, and assembled architecture. A small secondary figure or mask emerges near the hip aperture, and the irregular base integrates a hollow domestic volume — window grids, figural press-work, and cylindrical protrusions that suggest both pipe forms and architectural column stubs. The piece was designed to be walked around; the four faces are compositionally distinct, each advancing a different register of the maker's visual vocabulary.

CONDITION

Good overall with signs of outdoor display, including surface weathering, soiling, and accumulated patina across all faces. A repaired 2.5" corner is present. The intentional reveals at the hip and lower torso exposing the blue-grey interior core are part of the design and are not damage. Small losses, chips, and surface abrasions throughout are consistent with the medium and prior outdoor display.
