Mid-Century Turkish Yörük Kilim Runner, Geometric Diamond Medallions
A hand-woven Yörük kilim runner from Turkey, third quarter of the 20th century, in flat-weave construction with wool wefts on cotton warps. The field carries a vertical chain of four stepped diamond medallions in saturated orange, green, rust, deep navy, and aubergine, each radiating outward in concentric pixelated bands against a black ground. Flanking guard borders run zigzag lozenge motifs in coral and ivory, while terminal panels at each end carry a row of bold rust-and-orange X-forms on black — a signature device of nomadic Yörük weavers.
The Yörük are semi-nomadic Turkic pastoralists of Anatolia, and their kilims were woven for tent floors, bedding, and dowry use rather than for market — which is why the palette here runs hot and the geometry runs confident rather than refined. Color abrash (gradient shifts within a single field) is visible throughout the orange and red passages, a hallmark of small-batch dye lots and a quality collectors actively seek in tribal flat-weaves.
CONDITION
Good overall with honest age-appropriate wear. Selvedge is absent along one side with the weave intact to the current edge; no remarkable structural damage. Color run is present throughout, consistent with vegetable-dye bleeding from period washing — a documented characteristic of the type, not a defect. Fringe ends show expected fraying and shortening.
