Hastings Filters "Piston Man" Advertising Thermometer Sign, 1994
Tall painted-metal advertising thermometer produced for Hastings Manufacturing Company of Hastings, Michigan — makers of piston rings, oil filters, and transmission parts for the automotive aftermarket since the late 19th century. The sign carries the company's bold yellow-and-navy "H with arrow" logo at the top and the beloved Piston Man mascot at the base: the stocky cartoon figure in a red-and-white striped uniform, red "Hastings" cap, winking and pointing — his head styled as a filter or piston element, the ® mark on his cap confirming registered trademark status. A dual-scale Fahrenheit/Celsius tube runs the full length of the sign, calibrated from -40° to 120°F and -40° to 50°C. Wall-mountable with pre-drilled holes top and bottom.
Manufactured by Stout Marketing of St. Louis, MO, a producer of point-of-sale promotional signage for the automotive trade. The bottom edge is stamped Stout Marketing St. Louis, Mo. Made in U.S.A. 9409623 with a secondary reference number 102 at the lower left — the stock code consistent with a 1994 production date. CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Scratches, scuffing, and minor dents to the metal field; paint loss concentrated in the upper portion of the "H" logo. Graphics remain bright and legible throughout. Thermometer tube is intact; calibration not tested.
