1970 Royal Mint Coinage of Great Britain & Northern Ireland Proof Set — Final Pre-Decimal Issue
The 1970 Royal Mint Proof Set marks the official farewell to Britain's centuries-old £sd currency system. Issued the year before Decimal Day (15 February 1971), this commemorative set preserves the last circulating pre-decimal denominations as struck proofs — sharp strikes, mirrored fields, and frosted devices not found on business-strike examples. The cover's gilt "LSD" cipher (librae, solidi, denarii) is the Royal Mint's wink to the system being retired after nearly twelve hundred years of use.
The set comprises eight proof coins housed in the original sealed acrylic case with purple flocked insert, accompanied by the original maroon outer sleeve with gilt typography. All coins bear the Mary Gillick laureate portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse. Reverses feature the classic pre-decimal designs: Christopher Ironside's English and Scottish shilling shields, Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas's Tudor rose florin, the crowned shield half crown, the seated Britannia penny, and the Golden Hind half penny — designs now retired from circulation.

CONDITION
Set grades Good overall in original sealed case. The half penny shows notable copper spotting and toning across the obverse field — a known issue with 1970 proof bronze. Remaining coins present with proof surfaces intact; light toning to the bronze penny and medallion is consistent with age. Outer sleeve shows minor edge wear and rubbing to the gilt.
