1974 & 1975 Coinage of Belize Franklin Mint Proof Sets, Sterling Silver & Gold
Two complete Franklin Mint proof sets of the Coinage of Belize: a 1974 eight-coin sterling silver Collector's Proof Set and a 1975 eight-coin proof set struck in mixed metals. Each set comprises the first national coinage of Belize, with reverses bearing the national coat of arms surmounted by the country name "BELIZE," the motto "SUB UMBRA FLOREO," and the date. Obverses depict tropical birds native to Belize. Both sets were minted at the Franklin Mint under authorization of the Government of Belize.
The 1974 set is presented on its original clear plastic display tray inside the printed "COINAGE OF BELIZE — Collector's Solid Sterling Silver Proof Set" box, and is accompanied by the original Certificate of Authenticity signed for the Franklin Mint and dated OCT 1 1974, a Franklin Mint dealer letter signed by William F. Krieg, Vice President of Collector Relations, and the printed historical reference card. The 1975 set is housed on its original blue display card marked "MADE IN U.S.A." The six larger denominations of the 1975 set are struck in cupro-nickel. The two smallest denominations — the 1 Cent and 5 Cent pieces — are struck in nickel brass, a copper-zinc-nickel alloy that accounts for their yellow-gold appearance; this composition matches the circulating coinage specifications for these two denominations as issued by the Government of Belize in 1975.
