Russian Hand-Painted Lacquer Nesting Doll Set, St. Petersburg 2008, Signed, 5 Pieces
A hand-painted Russian matryoshka set of five graduated wooden dolls, signed and dated "С. Петербургъ 2008" (St. Petersburg 2008) on the underside of the largest doll with the artist's cipher. The fronts depict shawled village women in winter scenes — troika sleigh rides through snowy birch forests, figures in red caftans, and a thatched-roof izba at dusk — rendered in the Palekh-influenced lacquer-miniature tradition. The reverses carry stylized Khokhloma-style gold scrollwork with paired firebirds and floral medallions over deep aubergine and indigo grounds, finished with green skirts of fir trees.
Each doll is finished in a glossy lacquer with raised gold-leaf accents and fine linework throughout the headscarves, jewelry, and borders. The set nests cleanly from a 7" matriarch down to a 1¾" innermost doll. A characteristic artisan production from the St. Petersburg lacquer schools that revived after the Soviet period, when individually signed studio matryoshki replaced the mass-market export sets of earlier decades.
CONDITION
Good with no damage noted. Lacquer surfaces remain bright with gold leaf intact across all five dolls. Light handling marks consistent with age.
