Description

Hand-Hammered Brass Folk Art Mouse Sculpture, Mid-Century

A whimsical, oversized brass mouse rendered in hollow hand-hammered sheet construction, seated upright on its haunches with forepaws raised and a long curling wire tail trailing behind. The figure has an exaggerated, almost surrealist character — outsized cupped ears that flare and twist like calla lilies, a pointed snout with an incised mouth, and almond-shaped eyes worked in repoussé. The body is built from formed brass panels seamed vertically up the back, with the tail attached as a separate flat strip bent into shape.

The hollow construction and freehand metalwork place this in the tradition of mid-century decorative brass animal sculpture — the kind of large statement piece favored by Hollywood Regency and bohemian-modern interiors of the 1960s and '70s. The scale and presence read as a singular decorator object rather than a production-line piece.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear. A pronounced area of oxidation, verdigris, and surface crust is present on the proper-left ear where it meets the head — a dark patch with green and pink mineralization. Additional verdigris is present along the underside seam and the base of the tail. The brass surface carries scattered spotting, light dings, and handling marks throughout; polishing has been left to the next owner.
