Cast Plaster Sleeping Tuxedo Cat Doorstop Sculpture, Hand-Painted
A hand-painted cast plaster sculpture of a sleeping tuxedo cat, curled nose-to-tail in a posture instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever lived with one. The surface is finely tooled throughout with directional fur striations that follow the contours of the body — sweeping along the flank, curling around the haunch, fanning out across the tail. The painter has carried the black-and-white markings with care: a black mask broken by a white blaze running from forehead to muzzle, a pink nose, stippled whisker dots, a white bib and belly, and four white paws tucked beneath the chin and chest.
The form reads as a doorstop or hearth figure — substantial, low-slung, and weighted to sit firmly in place. The underside is hollow-cast and finished with green felt pads to protect floors and furniture, a detail consistent with decorative-use casting traditions. The piece is unmarked. The naturalism of the pose, the depth of the tooled fur, and the painter's attention to facial markings give it real presence as a sculptural object rather than a generic novelty cast.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. Paint fading throughout, particularly across the black coat where the matte finish has softened and lifted in spots. Scattered minor losses and rubs to the painted surface; underside felt pads present and intact.
