Large Hand-Painted Black Persian Cat Statue, Life-Size Figural Sculpture
A commanding life-size sculpture of a seated long-haired black Persian cat, hand-painted over a hollow cast body with deeply modeled fur that flows from the ruff down through the chest and around the curled tail. The matte black ground is highlighted throughout with hand-applied white drybrush strokes that trace the sculpted strands, giving the coat dimension and movement. Vivid green-and-yellow painted eyes and a delicately tinted gold-tan nose and mouth bring the face to life — alert, upright, watching the room.
The piece reads as a mid-to-late 20th century decorator sculpture in the tradition of Italian terracotta and ceramic floor cats popularized through the 1960s and 70s, though this example is constructed in a lighter hollow resin. The underside reveals a large central opening and exposed substrate consistent with mold-cast construction. At roughly 21 inches tall and 24 pounds, it has the presence of a real cat at your feet — the kind of statement object that anchored a foyer, a fireside, or a sunroom corner.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Paint shows scratches, chips, and areas of crackling and flaking throughout — concentrated on the face around the nose and mouth, on the ears, and along high points of the sculpted coat. Structurally sound and stable on its base.
