Hand-Painted Terra Cotta Folk Art Pig Bank, Mexico, Floral Scrollwork
A terra cotta piggy bank hand-painted in saffron yellow with dense black foliate scrollwork, scattered red and white floral clusters, and pale blue accents at the ears, snout, hooves, and along a sweeping ribbon that wraps the body. The face is finished with hand-drawn lashes, expressive blue eyes, and a tinted snout — folk-art decoration with a clear hand and a warm palette.
The form is traditional: a standing pig with a coin slot along the spine, sized to sit comfortably on a shelf or dresser. The painted surface has the soft, slightly powdery character of unglazed earthenware finished with matte pigments, and the decorative vocabulary — vining leaves, dotted blossoms, banded borders — is consistent with Mexican folk tradition. No maker's mark is present.
CONDITION
Fair. Age-appropriate finish wear and paint loss throughout, with rubbing to high points and the snout. One ear has been repaired. Sound and stable overall.
