Pair of Goebel Figural Ashtrays — Boy with Mandolin & Knitting Girl, Germany
A charming pair of mid-century figural ceramic ashtrays by Goebel, each pairing a hand-painted child figure perched at the rim of a notched oval dish. One depicts a boy in a polka-dot smock playing a mandolin with a yellow songbird at his side; the other shows a girl in headscarf and apron knitting, with a small black-and-pink bird perched on the dish edge alongside a loose ball of yarn. Both figures wear oversized clogs that dangle playfully over the bowl rims.
Both pieces carry the Goebel bee mark on the underside, with impressed mold numbers — 33 on the boy and 62 on the girl — and a "Germany" backstamp. The dish interiors display the crazed cream glaze characteristic of Goebel production from this period. The figural style draws from the same warm, rosy-cheeked children's illustration tradition that defines the broader Goebel decorative line.
CONDITION
Good overall. Both pieces show light crazing to the dish glaze consistent with age. The boy has a small chip to the bottom of one foot with a touched-up repair. Hand-painted surfaces remain bright with minor wear.
