Antique Oak 36-Compartment Alphabetical Sorter — Santa Clara County Mail Rack
A wall-mountable oak sorting rack with 36 alphabetized compartments, each slot labeled with a small black-and-white letter tile running A through Z, with additional unlettered slots at the far right marked with metal nameplates reading "Santa Clara County," "San Jose," and "City Santa Clara." The construction is straightforward and purpose-built: tiered horizontal shelves divided into vertical sections by thin board partitions, with a deep front rail and stepped back to angle the contents toward the viewer. The oak shows handsome quartersawn figure throughout, with the warm honeyed tone of decades of use and oil.
The California regional labels point to use in a Santa Clara County office — likely municipal, legal, or postal — where incoming documents or correspondence were sorted alphabetically and by jurisdiction. The form is consistent with early-to-mid 20th-century commercial office furnishings, and its scale makes it equally useful today as a mudroom mail organizer, studio paper sorter, or graphic wall-mounted display piece.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Scuffs, scratches, and small chips are present across the oak surfaces, with a notable chip and rough break to the upper-left back edge (see supplemental reference). Joinery remains sound and the letter tiles are intact and legible.
