Victorian Carved Oak Platform Rocker with Spool-Turned Spindles, c. 1890
A late-Victorian American platform rocker in quarter-sawn oak, dating to circa 1890. The crest rail showcases the dramatic ray-fleck figure prized in turn-of-the-century oak furniture, finished with a pressed-carved foliate frieze along its lower edge. Flanking the upholstered button-tufted back panel, a pair of spool-turned stiles rise to baluster-turned finials, with matching spool-turned arm supports and stretchers carrying the ringed motif throughout the frame. The shaped rocker arms and base members are accented with incised concentric-circle medallions — a signature flourish of the period's Eastlake-influenced parlor furniture.
The chair operates on a twin coil-spring platform mechanism mounted to the rear of the base, allowing a true rocking motion while the trestle feet remain stationary on their original steel cup casters. A paper tag and Certificate of Authenticity from O.J.'s American Antiques (San Jose / Felton, California) accompany the chair, identifying it as a restored turn-of-the-century oak classic with pressed carving, spool-turned décor, button-tufted back, and padded seat — priced at $585 at the time of that restoration.
