Description

Chelsea Clock Co. "Claremont" Ship's Wheel Aneroid Barometer & Thermometer on Mahogany Stand

A desk-top weather station styled as a ship's wheel, with eight turned brass spokes radiating from a polished brass-cased aneroid barometer and Fahrenheit thermometer. The silvered dial reads in both millibars and inches of mercury, with the temperature arc sweeping across the lower half and the working aneroid capsule visible through an open center aperture. The wheel pivots within a shaped mahogany cradle on a stepped, molded plinth — a handsome piece of nautical brass that reads equally well on a captain's desk or a paneled library shelf.

The Chelsea Clock Co. "Claremont" model was produced for the American leisure-boating and executive-gift market, pairing Chelsea's long reputation for precision marine instruments with a decorative form that translated shipboard navigation gear into a desirable parlor object. A signed presentation disc in red felt is affixed to the underside, suggesting this piece was given as a personal gift or award. The combination of working mechanism, nautical form, and finished mahogany base made the Claremont a fixture of the 1960s–70s yacht-club and corner-office shelf.

CONDITION

Good overall with no remarkable damage. Brass case and spokes retain a bright polish with minor scuffs and light handling marks; mahogany shows minor surface wear consistent with display use.
