José Cisneros "U.S. Civil War Union Sergeant c. 1864" Signed Pen & Ink Print
A signed pen-and-ink print by José Cisneros (1910–2009), the El Paso–based illustrator celebrated for his meticulous renderings of horsemen and historical figures of the borderlands. This composition, titled U.S. Civil War Union Sergeant — c. 1864, depicts a mounted sergeant bearing the Stars and Stripes against a backdrop of an adobe mission church and distant mountains — a quintessentially Cisneros pairing of military subject and regional setting. Plate-signed "J. Cisneros, El Paso '82" at lower right and pencil-signed "José Cisneros" in the margin below the image.
Cisneros emigrated from Durango, Mexico to El Paso as a young man and built a six-decade career documenting the riders, soldiers, conquistadors, and frontier figures of the greater region. His work is held by the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and the El Paso Museum of Art, and he was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2002. Matted in burgundy and presented under glass in a warm oak frame — ready to hang.
