Pair of Art Deco Reverse-Painted Foil Silhouettes — Flapper with Borzoi at the Water's Edge
A matched pair of 1920s–1930s Art Deco reverse-painted silhouette pictures on textured glass, depicting a slender flapper in cloche hat with a tall Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) at the edge of a willow-draped lake. The silhouettes are executed in opaque black on the reverse of convex-textured glass, with the highlights and sky areas backed by metallic foil — one panel in crinkled silver, the other in a brilliant blue-and-pink confetti glitter that catches light dramatically. Distant castle spires anchor the horizon, placing the scene squarely in the romantic, fairy-tale register popular with Deco-era parlor decoration.
Silhouette pictures of this type were a fixture of American homes in the 1920s and '30s, often sold as matched pairs through department stores and gift shops. The figural style — long-limbed woman, sighthound companion, willows, reflective water — draws on the European fashion-plate vocabulary of the period. Both panels retain their original narrow wood frames with silvered inner liners.
CONDITION
Good as a pair. Foil backing shows expected age — light tarnish to the silver panel and minor speckling/loss to the glitter panel along edges. Frames present age-appropriate wear with minor finish loss at corners. Glass intact on both; no cracks observed.
