Cast Iron Gilt-Finish Chinese Meditating Figure Bookends, Pair
A heavy pair of cast iron bookends modeled as seated Chinese children in flowing robes, hands folded at the waist and hair drawn into double knots atop the head. The gilded surface has taken on a warm, varied patina, with deeper bronze tones settling into the carved folds of drapery and along the high points of the cheeks and brow. Each figure sits with quiet, downcast eyes — a contemplative pose that reads equally as devotional and decorative.
The pair carries serious heft for their modest scale, anchoring a row of books with no risk of sliding. A handwritten dealer label on the underside of one figure identifies them as vintage cast gold-painted Chinese girl bookends with a prior asking price of $75.
