J.S. Co. Trianon Pattern Sterling Silver Berry Spoon, Muscatine, Iowa 1921
A sterling silver berry or casserole serving spoon by J.S. Co. in the Trianon pattern, marked verso with the maker's cartouche, "Sterling," and "Pat'd. 1921." The shovel-form bowl is paired with a tapered, fluted handle terminating in a stepped neoclassical finial with scrolled acanthus shoulders — a restrained late-Edwardian pattern with subtle Beaux-Arts detailing consistent with the Trianon line's design vocabulary. A second engraving on the handle reads "Muscatine, Ia. 1921," tying the piece to the Mississippi River town in Iowa, likely as a commemorative or presentation piece.
Muscatine in 1921 was riding the tail end of its famed pearl-button industry, having earned the nickname "Pearl Button Capital of the World" through its freshwater mussel shell trade. Commemorative sterling from that period and place is uncommon and likely connects to a local civic, fraternal, or anniversary event. The spoon weighs a substantial 75.7 grams of sterling.
CONDITION
Good. Light surface scratches and tarnish throughout consistent with age and use; a few darker spots to the bowl and handle. Marks and engraving remain crisp and fully legible. No bends, dents, or repairs noted.
