Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver "Winthrop" Pattern Serving Spoon, Pat. 1909
A Tiffany & Co. sterling silver serving spoon in the Winthrop pattern, patented 1909. The tapered, shouldered handle terminates in a neoclassical cartouche worked with a horn of plenty spilling grapes and fruit above a laurel-and-wheat swag — a quietly elegant Edwardian device characteristic of Tiffany's flatware design at the turn of the twentieth century. The reeded edges run the length of the handle and frame the smooth oval bowl with restrained precision.
The reverse is clearly marked TIFFANY & CO. STERLING PAT. 1909 M, the "M" date letter placing manufacture during the John C. Moore II directorship (1907–1947). Winthrop remains one of the more collectible Tiffany patterns of the Edwardian period, prized for its crisp Federal-revival lines and the well-modeled cornucopia terminal. A serviceable single piece for table use or a strong addition to an existing Winthrop service.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage. Light surface scratches and tarnish consistent with age and use; pattern detail remains crisp. Polishing left to the buyer.
