Stubai Aschenbrenner Fahrer Vintage Austrian Mountaineering Ice Axe
A classic mid-twentieth century Austrian mountaineering ice axe by Stubai, marked for the Aschenbrenner Fahrer pattern — a model associated with Peter Aschenbrenner, the Tyrolean climber who took part in the 1932 and 1934 Nanga Parbat expeditions. The forged steel head shows the classic asymmetry of a traditional piolet: a curved, serrated pick for arresting falls on hard snow and ice, paired with a broad adze for cutting steps. The diamond-shaped Stubai cabochon and "Aschenbrenner / Fahrer / Ges. Gesch." stamps are legible on the head.
The straight hickory shaft retains a warm honey tone with the expected handling patina, terminating in a steel ferrule and spike for self-belay on the descent. A nickel-plated steel wrist-loop ring slides along the shaft — the original carrying-strap fitting that defines this generation of European alpine axes. A tool from the rope-and-hobnail era of Alpine climbing, when the axe was the climber's third leg from bergschrund to summit.
CONDITION
Good overall with honest field use. Head shows even surface oxidation and pitting with light rust throughout; pick and adze edges are intact with no significant chips. Hickory shaft is sound and straight with scattered scuffs, minor staining, and the patina of long carry; ferrule and spike secure. Maker's marks remain readable.
