Bokhara Wool Runner with Tekke Gül Design, Late 20th C.
A hand-knotted Bokhara runner of Turkmen-inspired design, woven in Pakistan during the fourth quarter of the 20th century. The deep madder-red field is organized into two columns of Tekke güls — the eight-lobed octagonal medallions that define the Bokhara tradition — alternating with smaller cruciform secondary motifs. Multiple guard borders frame the field, including a primary band of stepped rosettes and snowflake stars in ivory, black, and rose against a wine ground. A diamond-and-cross elem panel finishes each end. The pile is 100% wool, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, with a knot density of 238 KPI.
Pakistani Bokhara weavings carry forward the design vocabulary of the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, adapted for the export market by workshops in Lahore and surrounding regions throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The format — long and narrow, with repeating güls — suits hallways, entry runs, and the foot of a bed. The saturated red ground and ivory accents read warm and traditional in any setting that welcomes pattern.
