French Louis XV Style Carved Oak Slant-Front Secretary Desk
A compact Louis XV style slant-front secretary in solid oak, built in the Provincial French tradition with hand-carved rocaille ornament and cast brass Rococo hardware. The fall-front is centered by a carved cartouche of foliate scrollwork within a shaped panel, flanked by reeded canted corners. Two graduated lower drawers carry matching shell-and-scroll carvings at each corner, with a deeper carved shell motif anchoring the shaped apron below. The piece stands on slender cabriole legs at the front terminating in scrolled toes, with square back legs.
The drop-front opens on brass hinges, supported by twin brass pull-out lopers, to reveal a fitted interior of six pigeonhole compartments over a single small central drawer with brass knob — the classic arrangement for correspondence, ledgers, and household papers. Three dovetailed drawers in total (two lower plus the interior drawer). Hardware throughout is unmarked cast brass in the Rococo taste, with foliate bail pulls on the lower drawers and a pierced escutcheon at the fall-front lock. No key present.
