United Furniture Corp. Limed Mahogany Mid-Century High Chest, c. 1968
A two-tier high chest by United Furniture Corporation of High Point, North Carolina, executed in bleached/limed mahogany with brushed aluminum hardware. The case is stenciled A-533-10 CH 68 on the back panel, a factory code consistent with United's mid-to-late 1960s production. The upper bank carries five dovetailed drawers fitted with small sculpted teardrop pulls; the top and third drawers retain their original divided interiors. The lower bank presents a three-panel front with larger crescent-form pulls, and the case rests on recessed brushed metal sabot feet.
United Furniture was one of the major High Point manufacturers of postwar modernist case goods, producing limed and bleached finishes throughout the late 1950s and 1960s in step with the era's preference for lighter woods and architectural silhouettes. The two-pull hardware program — teardrop above, crescent below — visually separates the two modules and is characteristic of United's mid-range bedroom lines from this period. Solid and veneered mahogany construction throughout.
CONDITION
Good overall with honest signs of use. Scratches and scuffing to the top and case sides, minor finish loss and chipping along the lower module's front edge, and age-appropriate wear throughout. Drawers operate smoothly and the case remains sturdy.
