Description

James Irwin Signed Apollo 15 NASA Photog — "Reach for Your Dreams, Aim High!"

August 1971. David Scott raises his Hasselblad and frames his crewmate against the gray rise of the Hadley-Apennine — Lunar Module Pilot James B. Irwin standing at attention beside the planted flag, right hand to his helmet in salute. Behind him sits the Lunar Module Falcon, gold foil catching the unfiltered sun, the Lunar Roving Vehicle parked to the right. It is one of the defining images of the entire Apollo program, and the man who lived it has signed this print in bold black ink.

This is an official NASA color press photograph, captioned along the lower border "ASTRONAUT IRWIN SALUTES FLAG AT APOLLO 15 HADLEY-APENNINE LANDING SITE." It is boldly signed "Jim Irwin" and personally inscribed in the upper sky field: "Officer Joe Bonomo — Reach for Your Dreams — Aim High!" Irwin was the eighth man to walk on the Moon, and in the years following Apollo 15 he devoted himself to inspirational and faith-based outreach — a sentiment this inscription captures directly. He died in 1991, and authentic signed examples carry a real premium over the post-humous forgeries that circulate.

The Mission

Apollo 15 launched July 26, 1971, and touched down at the Hadley-Apennine site on August 1. It was the first of the "J missions" — extended lunar stays with the first deployment of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, seen at right in this frame. Commander David Scott photographed Irwin during the flag ceremony near the LM Falcon. The image has become shorthand for the entire era of crewed lunar exploration.

Authenticity

Guaranteed authentic. This lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales. The signature and personal inscription are the work of James B. Irwin.

CONDITION

Very Good. The photograph face is clean and bright, with strong color and a crisp signature and inscription in black ink. The verso shows tape remnants at the left and right edges consistent with prior display mounting. No tears or creasing through the image.
