USAF Astronaut Badge — Sterling Silver, KREW Maker-Marked, 1960s
A United States Air Force Astronaut Badge in die-struck sterling silver, the reverse marked sterling and KREW. The central shield device carries a star above an orbital trajectory motif — the emblem authorized in 1963 for military personnel who flew above 50 miles altitude. Full-span wings frame the shield, and the piece retains its brooch-style pin back. At roughly 2 inches wide, this is the standard regulation dress size.
KREW produced regulation military insignia from the 1950s through the 1970s, a window that aligns with the earliest USAF Astronaut Badge production. The sterling composition and maker's mark separate this example from the base-metal and reproduction wings that dominate the category. The Astronaut Badge is a lower-production, specialist insignia relative to standard pilot wings, and it draws interest from both space-history and aviation-militaria collectors. Southern New Mexico's aerospace corridor — White Sands Missile Range, Holloman AFB, and the broader NASA/DoD test lineage — keeps regional demand for insignia of this kind active.
CONDITION
Very Good. Sterling surface shows a soft, even patina consistent with age, with light handling marks across the wing feathering. Pin and catch on the reverse are intact and functional.
