Maison Jansen Style Ebonized Marble-Top Enfilade Bookcase Console
A long, low ebonized bookcase console in the Maison Jansen manner, executed in the neoclassical idiom that defined high Parisian taste . The case presents a serpentine marble top — a warm peach and rose breccia with dramatic veining — set above an ebonized hardwood frame divided into four open compartments with eight adjustable shelves. The undulating front profile carries through both case and shelf line, giving the long span visual rhythm and lightness. Slender square-tapered legs terminate in brass sabot caps, lifting the whole composition with the restrained elegance characteristic of French Louis XVI Revival cabinetry.
Pieces in this vocabulary — ebonized finish, figured marble top, brass-capped legs, classical proportion stretched to dramatic length — were a Jansen signature and were widely interpreted by French and Italian ateliers from the 1940s through the 1960s for hôtel particulier libraries, salons, and entry galleries. At over seven feet wide and low in stance, this example reads as a console, a low bookcase, or a media cabinet equally well. The marble top lifts free for transport.
CONDITION
Good overall. The ebonized finish shows scratches, scuffing, and finish wear/loss throughout consistent with age and use, with rubbed edges revealing warm undertones. Three rectangular holes have been cut through the back panel of the right-hand compartment for prior media cable pass-through. Marble top is intact with natural veining; no major chips or cracks observed. Brass sabots present on all legs.
