Description

Yuri Zatarain Hecho en México Hand-Painted Ceramic Face Vessels, Pair

A sculptural pair of large hand-painted ceramic vessels by Mexican artist Yuri Zatarain, each rendered as a serene, closed-eyed face with black "hair" sweeping over the crown and a softly brushed cream complexion. The taller bottle form tapers to a slim black neck; the broader bell-shaped vessel reads almost mask-like, its wide cheeks giving the painted features room to breathe. Charcoal-line eyes and lashes, a delicately shaded nose, and warm terracotta lips finish each piece. Both carry the original orange Yuri Zatarain / "Hecho en México" roundel to the underside.

The reverse of each vessel is treated as a continuation of the composition — the black hair sweeps down the back in a single confident brushstroke, terminating in a painted knot or queue against the cream ground. The wide bell vessel retains its original retail price tag of $450.00 on the underside, providing a direct reference point for the original asking price. Displayed together, the contrasting silhouettes — one vertical and slender, one rounded and grounded — read as a deliberate pairing, equally at home in a contemporary entryway, a gallery wall niche, or flanking a fireplace.

CONDITION

Good to Fair overall. Both vessels show minor scuffing and small chips to the lower edges with some areas of paint loss and filler visible near the base; a chip is present at the lower left corner of the taller vessel. Imperfections sit low on the forms and are difficult to see when the pieces are standing upright. No remarkable damage to the painted faces.
