Spanish Baroque Carved & Parcel-Gilt Three-Drawer Chest with Winged Cherubs
A three-drawer chest built in the Spanish Baroque idiom, with each drawer front mounted with a deeply carved frieze of scrolling acanthus, rosettes, and a central winged cherub head (putto mask). The carved bands retain remnants of gold leaf over a dark ground, with the gilt worn to expose the bole and bare wood beneath — a weathered, high-contrast surface that reads as age, not neglect. The case sides carry a grid of recessed fielded panels, and the structure is solid wood throughout with iron drawer hardware.
The maker's mark, branded to the back boards, reads "Artes de México Internacionales, S.A." — a Mexican firm that operated as an exporter of hand-crafted colonial and Baroque revival furniture, active primarily in the mid-to-late 20th century. An incised "F.M.M." appears above on the top rail of the back; its meaning is not yet confirmed — it may represent an ownership monogram, a workshop identifier, or a craftsman's mark.
CONDITION
Good. Scratching, scuffing, and signs of use to the top surface. A small section of trim is absent (see photos). Gilt loss across the carved drawer fronts is consistent with the piece's distressed finish treatment and expected at this age.
