Description

Clyde Harwick "Crowned Crane" Brutalist Mixed-Metal Bird Sculpture on Stone, Piece #1

A torch-worked figural sculpture of a crowned crane, rendered in mixed metals by Clyde Harwick under his "nature's sculpture" line. The bird's body is built up in dripped and pooled brass and copper, the long neck rising to a beaked head topped with a radiating spray of black wire forming the crowned crest. Slender brazed legs carry the figure off a base of torch-cut agave or aloe leaves in mottled verdigris, copper, and rust patina, with cattail-form rods rising alongside. The whole composition is mounted to a natural cut-stone block. The head and neck carry a "CH" monogram signature, and a brazed cross-form mark sits within the foliage at the base.

Harwick worked in the Brutalist sculptural idiom popularized through the 1960s–70s, building naturalistic forms from welded and brazed scrap and sheet metal with deliberate molten texture and chemical patina. This piece is accompanied by Harwick's hand-completed certificate of originality, identifying it as a Crowned Crane made expressly for Bob Allyn and designated piece #1, signed by the artist. The contrast of the polished molten brass body against the oxidized greens and coppers of the foliage gives the figure a deliberately weathered, field-found character.

Authenticity

Accompanied by the artist's signed "nature's sculpture by clyde harwick" certificate of originality, hand-annotated "Made expressly for Bob Allyn," titled "Crowned Crane," and numbered piece #1. The sculpture itself carries a "CH" monogram and a brazed cross mark in the foliage. Certificate and marks are consistent with one another; the work sells with its original COA.

CONDITION

Good. No remarkable damage; sturdy and structurally sound on its stone base. Surfaces show the artist's intended molten texture and applied patina — verdigris, rust tones, and exposed copper are part of the designed finish rather than deterioration.
