Carved & Polychrome Wood Crocodile Figure, Naturalistic Folk Sculpture
A hand-carved wooden crocodile worked fully in the round, finished in layered polychrome that runs from mottled green across the back to warm ochre and rust along the flanks and belly. The artist gave it genuine character: a broad open jaw set with carved teeth and prominent canines, inset eyes, and deeply tooled scale work across the dorsal ridge and shoulders. Splayed, clawed feet and a curling tail complete the naturalistic stance.
Unlike the earthenware crocodile also offered in this sale, this figure is solid-carved wood — lighter at 4 lbs, with a hand-applied glossy finish rather than a fired glaze. The painted surface shows deliberate color blending, with green washes and earthy undertones that read as intentional naturalism rather than flat decoration. The underside reveals the bare wood beneath, unfinished, which is consistent with a piece intended for frontal display.
CONDITION
Good. Minor finish loss throughout, concentrated at high-wear points on the feet and jaw. No chips and no remarkable structural damage noted.
