Victorian Burl Walnut Domed Casket with Engraved Gilt-Brass Gothic Strapwork
A small domed-top casket in figured burl walnut, fitted throughout with engraved gilt-brass mounts in the Gothic Revival manner. The front carries a shaped escutcheon plate flanked by foliate corner straps, while the dome is dressed with a scrolled hinge plate, a pendant drop, and a hinged swing handle, each piece hand-engraved with hatching and dot-punched detail. The burl shows the dense eye-and-cluster figure prized for caskets of this type, with a warm aged patina across the panels.
The interior is fully felt-lined in green. Caskets of this scale served as desk or dressing-table boxes for stationery, jewelry, or keepsakes through the mid-to-late 19th century, the heavy brass strapwork lending a deliberately medievalizing weight to a domestic object.
CONDITION
Fair. Scuffing and age-appropriate wear throughout the burl, with surface cracking to the lid and veneer. The lid is detached and the hinges are damaged; supplemental images show the failed hinge plates and loosened hardware at the rear. Key is absent.
