Description

1971 NASA — Signed by 9 Astronauts incl. Allen, Fullerton & Mullane

This 1971 "Decade of Space Achievements" First Day Cover carries the original signatures of nine NASA astronauts whose careers defined the Space Shuttle era. Postmarked Houston, August 2, 1971, the cover pairs Art Craft cachet artwork honoring Alan Shepard and the Apollo program with two 8-cent "United States in Space" commemorative stamps.

Hand-signed in blue and black ink by:

  • Richard Truly — STS-2 pilot; second man to fly a Shuttle to orbit; later NASA Administrator
  • Gordon Fullerton — STS-3, STS-51F
  • Bryan O'Connor — STS-61B, STS-40
  • Joe Allen — STS-5, STS-51A
  • Don Peterson — STS-6
  • Don Lind — STS-51B
  • Steven Hawley — STS-41D, 61C, 82, 93
  • Mike Mullane — STS-41D, 27, 36
  • William Lenoir — STS-5

The roster spans an extraordinary cross-section of early Shuttle crews — including two complete crew pairings (Allen and Lenoir on STS-5, Hawley and Mullane on STS-41D) and four scientist-astronauts. A genuine convergence of pilots and PhDs from the program's founding flights, anchored by NASA Administrator Richard Truly. A striking single piece for the serious spaceflight or autograph collector.

Condition: In very good condition overall. The cachet and postmark remain crisp, and all nine signatures are clear and legible, as shown in photos. Light handling wear consistent with age; please review all images closely.

Authenticity: All signatures are original, hand-signed examples. A Mesilla Valley Estate Sales Certificate of Authenticity accompanies this lot.

Dimensions: Cover measures 3 5/8" × 6 1/2".
