Buttercup-Painted Pine Footstool, Country Primitive Bootjack Form
A small country footstool in solid pine, worn down to a soft buttercup-yellow finish over an earlier green ground that shows through at the high-wear edges and corners. The single-board top sits on splayed end-board legs cut with arched bootjack feet, the long sides rounded at each end into gentle ear-like lobes. Construction is plain and honest: nail and peg joinery, a center peg through the top, and a natural age split running the length of the seat board.
The form is a familiar one in American and European farmhouse interiors — a milking stool, foot rest, or step-up that earned its keep close to the floor. Years of repainting and handling have left the surface with the kind of layered, broken patina that gives painted country furniture its appeal.
CONDITION
Good. Sturdy and sound on all four feet. Long age split through the top board, paint loss and chipping at edges and corners revealing earlier green paint beneath, and scattered nail-head wear throughout — all consistent with age and use.
